RETREAT TRIPS:
INNER RADIANCE MEDITATION RETREAT ~ Experience Waves of Inner & Outer Bliss In Dunagiri, India’s Sacred Himalayan Paradise
Fall 2012 (September 28 - October 10th, 2012) with Dr. Katy and Sri Jeff Poole, Shruti Institute for Vedic Arts
We Invite You to Join Us...For a Profoundly Blissful & Life Enhancing Meditation Retreat Deep in the Sacred Heart of India's Spiritual Culture.
Most India group trips these days take you to the popular and ordinary tourist attractions, which have lost their connection to the real inner core of India and have replaced it with its modern Western culture. This trip, on the other hand, will transport you off the beaten paths to a remote, exquisitely beautiful, and untouched sacred landscape that is increasingly more difficult to find in India today.
For thousands of years, yogis have retreated from the demands of life to the Himalayan mountains in order to quicken their spiritual progress by attaining deep peace of mind through silent deep meditation. Among all the places revered throughout the history of India for their spiritual power, Dunagiri stands out as an exceptionally sacred place for meditation.
Hanuman Carries the Sanjivani Mountain
One of the most revered tales of India is the story of Lord Rama. Rama's wife, Sita, had been captured by Demons refusing to return her to Rama. Lakshmana, Rama's brother became fatally wounded in the battle to free Sita from the Demons and his deadly wounds could only be healed by medicine made from a very rare plant found deep in the distant jungles of the Himalayan hills called the Sanjivani herbs.
Lord Hanuman loved Rama so much that he volunteered for the task to fly to the distant Himalayas, find the Sanjivani hill where the herb grows and bring it back to save Laksmana's life. When Hanuman arrived at the hill where the Sanjivani herb grew he discovered so many healing herbs there that he couldn't be certain which one was the special Sanjivani herb, so he decided to carry the entire hill back with him. The sacred hill that Lord Hanuman carried back with the Sanjivani herb is said to have been Dunagiri.
Not only has Dunagiri been known for its healing herbs and as a favorite spot of highly accomplished yoga masters over the centuries (masters such as Neemkaroli Baba, Haidakan Baba, Swami Rama, Mahavatar Babaji, and so on), but it’s also a rare “power place” of the goddess Shakti. Such a power place is called a shaktipitha or “seat of liberating feminine energy."
For spiritual yogis, Dunagiri shaktipitha is an extraordinary place to gain special progress in their path. Located in the Kumaon region of the Himalayan foothills, seekers can feel the palpable vibrations and divine energies of saints who have meditated here since millennia. The trees and naturally growing medicinal-herbs in the forests here seem to be also charged with these vibrations.
Your Guides, Sri Jeff and Dr. Katy Poole, are Avid Lovers of India. They each have Dedicated their Lives to Understanding & Learning from the Spiritual Traditions and Cultures that have Thrived in this Country for Thousands of Years.
Sri Jeff developed his interest of India at age 19 after learning to meditate, but his first visit to India didn't come until 1980, when at age 26 he came to New Delhi to attend an International Vedic Science conference for one month. He has returned many times since to further study this ancient Vedic knowledge under the guidance of Vedic Masters while soaking in more of India's beauty, charm and spiritual depth. He has always treasured the simple innocence found within the eyes and souls of the Indian people whom he has come to love as family. He describes his experience of India as "coming home."
Dr. Katy first visited India in 1988, after reading Paramahansa Yogananda’s Autobiography of Yogi, becoming determined to experience the spiritual enlightenment she believed could be found there. Upon landing in India, she immediately fell in love — a deep love that has ever changed her, continually calling her home again and again. A love that allowed her to live as part of everywhere she visited while in the country for 5-years. She felt completely at home with the aromas, smells, food and clothing, with the raw beauty of all aspects of humanity exposed without shame that brought her to realize the depths of human spirit within herself and ultimately inspired her to earn a Ph.D. in Religious Studies.

III. Your Experience Of India
Etiquette and Responsibility:
Since we’ll be traveling in areas of India revered as sacred places, there is no alcohol, cigarette, or meat consumption allowed due to local custom. We ask everyone to respect these customs and refrain from drinking, smoking, and a non-vegetarian diet.
The meals we’ll enjoy will be locally produced and when possible organically grown. We believe you’ll find the local Indian cuisine delicious, healthy, and nutritious. We ask the cooks to minimize the hot spices and oils that tend to cause gastric distress. And if you have special food requirements, we’ll make every effort to accommodate your needs.
We ask that everyone refrain from eating on the streets as the food tends to be contaminated and may cause diarrhea or worse – dysentery. You should only drink bottled or filtered water, which is readily available everywhere in India. Otherwise, we’ll be providing you with a detailed health debriefing prior to departure.
Our aim is to provide you with an exceptional, life-changing experience. Sometimes, however, there are circumstances that may arise beyond our control. While India has made great strides in the improvement of her infrastructure, it is still a developing country and sudden changes of plans may be necessary. We ask you to be flexible and open-minded. In fact, flexibility is one of the greatest teachings India has to give us!
We also will be traveling as a group in close proximity with each other. There may be times when we may become annoyed or disgruntled with our fellow travelers or group leaders. We ask that you take these opportunities to put your Yoga into practice and gain greater inner strength. To this end, we ask that you don’t gossip or create any other kind of friction that would interfere with positive group dynamics and instead raise your concerns with your group leaders directly.
We also ask that you stay with the group at all times and not venture on your own.
Finally, we travel to India to experience her culture and customs on her terms, not ours. Dr. Poole and Sri Jeff will help to explain proper cultural etiquette and we expect everyone to respect the Indian way of life – even if you don’t agree with it. We aim to make positive alliances with our Indian friends and not leave them with a negative impression of the “ugly Americans!”
Theft, Illness, and Injury:
We are not responsible for thefts, illnesses, or injuries you may experience while on this trip. We will take every precaution to help avoid these problems, but we also expect that all participants will take great care of their personal belongings, follow the health protocol we recommend, and not take physical risks that could potentially harm yourself or others.
NOTES:
